About Leeds Contra
Leeds Contra organise club dances on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month except July and August between 8 - 10 pm at Headingley Parish Hall, Leeds, LS6 3AW with our resident band, Good Parking, and club callers. We also organise a series of three dances from September to November, "Contra in the Fall", featuring the best of British contra bands and callers. In addition we occasionally organise a Spring contra dance, often with a band or caller from across the Atlantic.
Contra or American style Barn Dance is fast, flowing dancing to fiddle based music with many of the figures similar to those done at barn dances. You don’t need to bring a partner and you will dance with most of the other people in the hall during the evening and cannot help but come away happy at the end of the night. All the dances will be explained by an expert caller and the dancing is done to a fast walk with all the figures flowing one into another accompanied by fiddle based reels or jigs with the occasional waltz or march.
