Highland Charity Jive is an informal group run entirely by volunteers to provide modern jive classes followed by freestyle in Inverness. No one gets paid and everyone pays the same entrance fee. We are not a charity, but our group name derives from the fact that all our profits are gifted to local charities.

Modern Jive is a dance style developed in the UK during the 1980s based on a style of jive that evolved in France after World War II when American dances such as the Jitterbug were popular. It is derived from West Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, Rock & Roll, Salsa and various other dance styles. The main difference between it and the faster Ballroom Jive of the 1930s & 40s is the simplification of footwork by removing syncopation such as chassé. It can be danced to a wide variety of tempos and music, and moves can be danced in any order depending on which handhold or other connection the lead is using.

You do not need to come with a partner, as everyone swaps round and experienced dancers are happy to dance with beginners. All ages 18+ are welcome and as it can be danced at a slow speed there’s no upper age limit!
